Radioshack, dubya tee eff?

I've been dealing with a faulty 3.5 mini stereo cable connected to my surround sound from my PC and it would make a horrible humming noise and mute my sound if it wasn't in the right position.
So I finally went down to buy a new one, and figured I'd pick up what I needed to hook up my Xbox 360 to my surround sound system.
I needed an RCA with two male plugs on one end and two female on the other.
I could swore that RadioShack made custom cables, so I went in.
I found the RCA cables and asked a clerk if they could make a custom one and they replied "Oh, we don't do that".
Okay, that's cool, I'll find a coupler.
For TWO female/female couplers it was $4.39.
Still, that's okay, but what really set me off, was that a 12 foot 3.5 mini stereo cable was $5.99 and a male/male RCA cable (3 FEET) was $6.99!
What the fuck?
So I walk out with two couplers, two cords and $17 less.
I mean, hey, $17 isn't that big of a deal, but still, what the hell happened? Since when are RCA cables so damned expensive?
